Review: Perversions of Science 2 w/ Chris Liebing
« on: March 30, 2005, 06:00:26 pm »
First off, Its great to see some great talent, all the way out in the middle of Iowa.

I made the trek down to Cedar Rapids, IA from Minneapolis to see Chris for a great 3 hour set.

I arrived at the evening at 8:30 or so, The doors opened at 7, so the first 90 minutes, I am unable to say.

     Time slots went as follows:
     Hector > 7-8
     Roundabout > 8-9
     Lady Crysis > 9-10
     Geoffrey Law > 10-11
     C-Minus > 11-12
     DJ Sonar > 12-1
     The Goat > 1-2
     Chris Liebing > 2-5 (+ 30 minute Encore)

Lighting was sparse as most of it was controlled automatically, aswell as the strobe. Sound System was also on the low side, but it didnt hurt ones ears as it was tuned well, and more quiet.

Venue looked like a small 'abandoned' looking theatre, perfect for an event like this.

Rounabout laid down a bit of techy trance and anthems, but sadly only a few were there at that time to hear his music.

Lady Crysis got on the decks, and thats when the party started, She played some electro breaks and funky breaks, mixed like butter. This is also when more people started to pile in.

Geoffrey Law then took the decks to spin some techtrance/techno. His set was farely decent, but I did think he lacked energy.
     Tracks I could ID:
Passive Resistance - Praiseworthy Tunes (Hoipolloi Mix)
     Chris Liebing - Natural Selection

C-Minus was live at 11pm, and spun DnB, His mixing was excellent, though his track selection was mediocre until he played some remixes of Ludacris, and Marilyn Manson.

DJ Sonar took down the house when he got on. His unique style of 'electro funky bass good stuff.' So far it has seemed like the prior DJs were strictly warm up, but sonar really got everyone going.

TheGoat played mostly techno, a little tech-trance.  His mixing was farely good, he used final scratch.
     Tracks I could ID:
Adam Beyer & Lenk feat. Tiga - Heartbreak

Chris Liebing took the decks at 2 am, but was stopped after the 2nd song becuase a fuse blew. After a 3-4 minute puase, music was back and going strong, Liebing gets into it and is a true crowd pleaser. Liebing's music has alot of bangin' bass and energy that really electifies those in the crowd. He played a great set. Throughout his entire mix, Chris is up there jumping with a smile on his face. At 5:00, Chris slowly used his Delay and High Speed echo effects and made it sound like he was going to stop. Everyone cheer'd loud as he had a huge grin on his face. He yelled out "Im not done! Give me 5" He dropped some hard bass and rocked the auditorium for 30 more minutes, throwing T-shirts to those in the audience.

     Tracks I could ID:
      Alex Bau - Nervous Nights
Los 3 Brasileros - Vivo (Eric Sneo Remix)
Chris Liebing - American Madness [which i found very appropriate]
     Hardcell and Grindvik - Square
DK - Murder Was The Bass
Speedy J & Chris Liebing - Trezcore [The crowd went wild, and I yelled TREZCORE!!! then he looked at me and smiled real big]

The White Stripes - 7 Nation Army (Chris Liebing Bootleg Remix)

Also, Chris brought his Girlfriend, and Sound Guy there with him. He set up 2 laptops(both Apple, one running FinalScratch, the other Ableton Live), a sampler/looper and Alesis Air FX

    DJ Sonar

    DJ Sonar

    Sonar and theGoat

    Chris Liebing

    Uh OH! The fuse blew!

Here you can see my head between Chris's head and arm

Glad you had a good time Lane. That was an excellent review, you might have a good future in it while waiting to break out as a DJ/producer in your own right. :)
