BOOM / 2006.10.10 with special guest: Elevation

Elevation has seen rapid success through his musical production talents. Born in Detroit, Michigan, in the United States, Elevation's interest in music was visible from the start. By the young age of five this interest really began to soar when he touched the piano for the first time in his life. He was immediately fascinated by the instrument and the sound that it made and continued to play for years. To further feed his burning passion for music he was introduced to playing the organ when he was eleven years old. After many years of classical training, and winning first place college level musical scholarships at ages twelve through fourteen, he discovered Electronic Dance Music.

In 2001, when Trance was at its first peak, Elevation purchased his first pair of turntables and a mixer. After getting his feet wet behind the decks and being inspired by artists like BT, ATB, Sasha & Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, and Armin Van Buuren, to name a few, he began to create music on his own.

Elevation's production skills truly began to soar in August of 2002, while using the infamous bedroom production software, Fruity Loops. During the course of the following year, he produced countless tracks, many of which became favorites among friends and others with whom he shared his work. Shortly after May of 2003, Elevation upgraded his producing software to Reason 2.5, rendering him able to unleash the full potential of his talent.

Elevation's breakthrough arrived when he submitted a project of his, then entitled Clear Blue Sky, to well-known DJ and producer, Markus Schulz. Schulz, having a keen ear for talent, quickly began work on the track with Elevation, who soon became Schulz's protégé. After working together for a few short weeks, Schulz and Elevation produced the masterpiece of progressive-trance, Clear Blue. Released on Armada Music imprint Electronic Elements, Clear Blue has seen success worldwide with some of the biggest names in trance today. Together with Markus, Elevation helped conceive the sound that has come to be known as "Coldharbour". Then, at age 16, Elevation reached heights he never foresaw.

During the course of 2004, Elevation found himself busier than ever. Expanding his DJ career, he began a semi-monthly residency at the prominent club Bleu in Detroit. He has played packed venues in Miami and other places around the US, playing alongside such greats as Armin van Buuren, Gabriel & Dresden, Max Graham, and of course Markus Schulz. Dont be fooled though, he hasnt slacked off in producing! In August of 2004, Elevation completely upgraded his studio and from then on his achievements continued to multiply.

In 2005, Inspired by Markus Schulz, Airwave, Sander van Doorn, Andy Moor, and others he began to explore new sounds. He created his first solo production Ocean Rain which is featured on A State of Trance 2005, Mixed by Armin Van Buuren. Following shortly thereafter Elevation was approached by Armin Van Buuren to remix the single on his artist album Shivers. He also delivered a storming remix of Hammer & Bennett - Language released on Coldharbour Recordings. He has also spent a great deal of time collaborating on the Markus Schulz album. In july, Markus Schulz & Elevation stepped in to the studio once again! This time to give Nalin & Kane's "Open Your Eyes" the Coldharbour remix treatment, which received confirmed support from Tiesto, Talla 2XLC, Armin Van Buuren, Edgar V, and more.

Now, in 2006, Elevation has stepped up to the plate once again. His most recent remixes of Basic Perspective - Small Step On The Other side, Kenneth Thomas Featuring Colleen Riley - Ghost in The machine, and the club stomping remix collaboration with Markus Schulz, Karen Overton - Your Loving Arms (Markus Schulz & Elevation Intro Mix) are seeing strong support from the top DJ's in the world. Elevation has made his debut as a headlining DJ accross the globe in cities such as Las Vegas, Toronto, Miami, Los Angeles, and Dallas. Currently Elevation holds a residency at Detroit's only super-club; The Bleu Room.

Elevation is STILL hard at work in the studio developing new sounds in his productions and his DJ sets. He is working on several remixes and will then focus solely on original productions.

Be sure to keep an eye and ear out in order to catch him at a club near you soon!

Kenneth Thomas has quickly positioned himself as one of the top DJs in not only Detroit but now the US. His residency on Saturday nights at Motor Detroit launched him into the national spotlight.

Headlining Toronto's System Soundbar and The Guvernment along with regular events in Cleveland, New York, Chicago and Miami and even being tapped to join Paul Oakenfold on his recent US tours, Kt has moved away from his local residencies and has begun to establish him as a national headliner.

Kenneth's studio work has also began to gain as much attention as his djing. He has releases signed on some of the biggest record labels in the business including Perfecto, Armada's Coldharbour & Electronic Elements, Hope Recordings, Alter Ego and his tracks have seen regular support from the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Markus Schulz, Marco V, Steve Lawler & Hernan Cattaneo to name a few.

Kenneths eclectic mix of Trance, Progressive and House will guarantee that youll never know what direction his night will lead. But one thing people love most about Kts sets is that he is always bringing something fresh to the room and knows exactly how to piece the vibe together.

"This is the most amazing sound I have ever encountered, I just want to share it with as many people as possible"-KT

There are people who play records and there are DJs who blow minds, Eddie Halliwell is the latterwho makes every set, no matter how small the club or how big the festival, feel like the closing party of the end of the world - Mixmag, 2003.

'At 26 Eddie is a DJ legend to rank among the best of them..so clubland make some noise for clublands answer to Rocky.' - Mixmag 2006

'There are people who play records and there are DJs who blow minds, Eddie Halliwell is the latterwho makes every set, no matter how small the club or how big the festival, feel like the closing party of the end of the world.' - Mixmag

Despite only just turning 26 Eddie Halliwell is now firmly established as one of the most exciting DJs in the world having just been crowned Mixmags World Number 1 DJ for a second time and also earlier this year being Voted 17th The 2005 World DJ Mag Top 100 Poll. Unbelievably passionate about music he infects the crowd with his energy, captivating them with his highly visual performances (his interaction with the crowd has got to be seen to be believed!) and jaw dropping turntable trickeryhe really is a true DJ.

Eddie has become arguably the most in demand DJ in The UK , with him receiving rave reviews and capacity arenas for his sets at Creamfields, Global Gathering, Colourfest (Scotland) and Escape into The Park (Wales), spinning an unbelievable fourth Radio 1 Essential Mix, having both a second sell out BOSH! Live" UK Tour and a sell out Pioneer 909 Tour, and a sell out Fire It Up Tour. All the above whilst hosting his own Radio 1 Show which continues from strength to strength, most recently mixing a compilation for The Mighty Cream and previous mixes for Ministry of Sound, not forgetting Mixmags long awaited highly acclaimed follow up to the legendary Bosh CDs, named Fire It Up!!

2006 has already seen dates in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Singapore, Chicago, LA, San Fransisco, Miami, Puerto Rico, Moscow, Sweden, KL, Toronto, Vancouver, Amsterdam, Minneapolis and with Cream (Amnesia, Ibiza), an astonishing fifth year as Judgement Sunday Resident, and visits to South Africa, Uruguay, Poland, China, to name but a few, it looks like the Eddie Rollercoaster is in full fire motion!

There was a considerable rise in demand for Eddie internationally in 2005 with two tours of East Asia, a tour of Australia and New Zealand alongside Fatboy Slim, monthly visits to the USA, numerous visits to South America, Europe, Canada, Russia, Dubai and Egypt, being one of only a handful of DJs asked to play 2 sets at the infamous Dance Valley on his debut, debuting Skol Beats Festival (Brazil), Trance Energy (Holland) Mysteryland (Belgium) and was requested to play The Malaysian Grand Prix, alongside Felix Da Housecat. He has also enjoyed an astonishing fourth season as resident at Judgement Sundays and embarked on his first season with Cream at Amnesia alongside Paul Van Dyk and Tiesto.

2004 had as many achievements as 2005. In August he debuted at Homelands and completed his third live Radio 1 Essential Mix alongside Paul Oakenfold at Cream @ Amnesia. This was an experience Eddie particularly relished as it marked his first official duties as a new Radio 1 Resident, having won this coveted position following his previous Essential Mixes (May and August 2003) with a series of outstanding guest mixes on Judge Jules & Pete Tongs regular Weekend shows. Earlier in May of 2004, Eddie hosted his first show, as part of the Radio 1 Residency.

Having been brought up in Wigan, in the north west of England, it is where Eddie made his name and by 2002 held residencies at both Goodgreef (Mixmag Club of the Year 2003 & Runner-Up 2004) and Gatecrasher. Now he is a headliner at both clubs! 2004 saw Eddie chosen to play the closing set in the Main Arena at Creamfields (the previous year he was the only DJ to feature in two arenas, headlining the Frantic/Nukleuz tent as well as the Cream Main Arena). Gatecrasher also chose Eddie to headline the second main arena at the Gatecrasher Summer Sound System (2002).

To achieve this Eddie has spent nearly a decade honing his skills on the decks. Having caught the DJ-ing bug at 15 he was too young for clubs so channelled his creative energies into a Music Technology course where he learnt some of his now renowned hip hop scratches. His ability to adapt these to fit over other genres of music has earned him not only respect amongst fellow DJs but also admiration from stunned crowds. Eddies technical ability is such that when he is in front of the mixer he utilises it as a means to create energy and new sounds with rapid cut ups and warped effects. And its not just the dance floor that loves this mind boggling trickery Eddie is now working alongside leading audio manufacture Pioneer to help develop the next generation of DJ technology!

While the true Eddie experience can only be gained in a club, he has also mixed one disc of Gatecrasher Residents Transmission and for Mixmag (the worlds biggest dance music and clubbing magazine), mixed two massive cover mount CDs in his own name. Forging an exciting, new, tough sound combing tech-trance and hard dance elements the first, BOSH!, was one of the most successful Mixmag CDs to date and in 2003 clubbers demanded a follow-up so Next Level BOSH! was born. However, with this still failing to quench the publics thirst at the end of 2004 Mixmag and Eddie linked up to put on five massive BOSH Live events around the UK, an unprecedented move for the magazine. Due to further more public demand, Eddie has recently mixed his third Mixmag CD Fire It Up!

In an unprecedented time frame, Eddie has firmly established himself as one of the most talked about and exciting DJs in the world. With the recent launch of his Fire It Up brand, it looks like the whole world will be screaming EDDIE, EDDIE, EDDIE!

Trance, whether you like your trance melodic and uplifting, or hard and fast, trance by any definition is here to stay. From the warehouse parties of the late 80’s to car commercials in 2001, trance has become part of the new millennium, part of our lifestyle. And all because of DJs like George Acosta. George proves every time he puts a needle on a record that "trance”, whatever the label, has changed, evolved, become a lifestyle, a culture… as well it should. With over 15 years of experience as a DJ and producer, George has helped change and evolve trance from an underground movement to massive festival experiences throughout the world. “George Acosta is probably America’s most unique DJ and has undoubtedly been a major force in shaping the sound of trance in Miami and beyond” says fellow DJ Dave Ralph. George Acosta is America’s representative in the global Trance scene.

Coming up playing warehouse parties in his native Miami, he then went on to producing tracks of his own with such international hits like Planet Soul, Emotions, Taking Over Space, R U Awake and The Reaper. He then made the next logical step for a successful DJ/producer and opened his own record store, Grooveman Music in Miami.

He knows his crowds so well because he is just as big a fan as they are of his music. Just like the thousands he plays for, George Acosta lives it. George tries to maintain a close connection to the people who come to hear him play because like them, he discovered the music as a fan first.

It was during his three-year residency at Miami's famed Shadow Lounge that George honed his craft and began educating South Beach to this wonderful emotional roller-coaster ride that was quickly moving west from Europe. Now firmly entrenched in South Beach, George produced his first mix cd, “Awake”. This became the definitive sound of South Beach. It was this same cd that helped propel George on to the world stage.

Facts

Name: Håkon O. Lofthus
Born: 07.04.1985
Live: Oslo, Norway
Occupation: Student, producer, dj
Status: Girlfriend
Aliases: Hawk, HKN, Air Breeze

My biography

So who is this “Hawk” that so many people are talking about? The guy behind those tracks and remixes being hammered by djs as Above & Beyond, Markus Schulz, Blank & Jones, Armin and on Pete Tongs show on BBC 1?

Well, “Hawk” is actually named Håkon Lofthus, and was born in Gjøvik, Norway, back in 1985, and discovered music at a very young age.
As a 7 year old, he already started playing the guitar, but over the years the guitar has been replaced with computers and synths.

A dj-mixer was bought, and he learned beat mixing the hard way. No pitch or cue involved, only a crappy Sony cd player and a Discman. Gaining status in the area with his friend Thomas Sagstad as the talented, young djs they quickly got bookings on bigger parties like Myth, Fascinated and Payday in Norway.

Production wise Håkon have evolved over the years, and got himself a nice studio setup and found his style of choice: Trance or more defined as a hybrid between progressive and trance.

As a 21-year old Hawk are now signed to major labels such as Anjunadeep, Enhanched, Realmusic Recordings and Active Recordings. Recently he has also remixed tracks for big labels such as Armada, Enhanched, AVA, Red Force and others. His tracks have been hammered from djs like Above & Beyond, Perry O´Neil, Armin Van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Tall Paul, Andy Moor and Matt Darey to name a few. The track “Need For Cognition” was the one that boosted his career and have was played on Pete Tongs Essential Selection, listed on the UK’s Cool Cuts Charts +++

For his young age he already has 6 years of experience as a dj from small clubs to bigger parties. He has arranged some of the most successful parties in Norway, had numerous radio-residencies and guestmixes. November 2005 Hawk did a guest mix for Above & Beyond’s show “Trance around the world,” which was a huge success. People liked the mix so much that it was voted the best radioshow on the official Above & Beyond/Anjunabeats forums. Surely Håkon is now quickly getting a name in the international scene.
With lots of releases coming up, radio-residencies and dj-gigs, this will probably not be the last time you’ll hear the name Hawk.

“It´s one of these tracks we´ve heard once, and then had to hear again, again and again..”
-Above & Beyond about track of the week on TATW: Hawk – Need For Cognition
