Hour 2: Porter Robinson
(Right Click, Save As)

Unlikely doesn’t even begin to describe Porter Robinson’s rapid ascent to the forefront of the world of dance music. Hailing from North Carolina, 18-year-old Porter Robinson had never set foot in a club when his smash hit “Say My Name” shot to number one on Beatport’s Electro-House chart, making people do just that on dancefloors and DJ booths across the globe.

Complex yet catchy, and classic yet cutting edge, Porter Robinson’s instantly recognizable sound has earned him the raving support of legendary producers such as Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, David Guetta, The Crystal Method and Armand Van Helden, and landed him shows across the globe – all before he has even had the chance to finish high school.

Some might call Porter a prodigy, but that label belies his musical maturity and ignores his years of production experience, which reveal themselves in the way he blends the best of seemingly distinct genres into a style uniquely his own. His massive electro hooks paired with nasty dubstep warbles and shimmering trance breakdowns transcend tired genre adjectives like “progressive” or “fidget”, taking listeners into an uncharted territory of hard-hitting house music.

He started to consolidate this jockey sluttage in 1996 when he found himself teaming up with Royce & Paul Saint to form ‘Just Pure Rhythm’ for the seminal breakbeat production “The Situation”. Difficult though it was for a man with such a roving musical eye, Jay opted for a bit of monogamy and settled down with ‘Breakbeat’.

Being faithful soon paid off, and 1999 Jay took up a successful residency on the infamous pirate station Breaks FM 103.2. Jay’s recently teamed up with some the scene’s best producers including 2 Sinners, Smithmonger & Atomic Hooligan.

Hour 2: Bass Kleph
(Right Click, Save As)

Beatport #1 remixer, label boss, songwriter and one of few DJs who can still sell tens of thousands of compilations, not to mention smash a festival stage – Bass Kleph seems to have done it all.

In 2007, Bass Kleph founded Vacation Records, followed in 2009 by the more stripped-back sound of Exit Row. Releasing and collaborating with international talent like Wolfgang Gartner, Micky Slim, Mowgli, and big locals like Hook n Sling, Stupid Fresh, Twocker, Tommy Trash, fRew, Dopamine, Bass Kleph’s labels and his music have helped popularise a wonderfully Australian view of the world.

In Australia, Bass Kleph has recently compiled and toured Ministry of Sound Australia’s Guide to the Underground with Afrojack and played the main stages at the Good Vibrations Festival.

Ricky has been djing for almost five years. Although, in his short experience due to a relentless seek for quality, he has certainly progressed at a remarkably fast pace.

Like many successful DJs, Ricky comes from a varying contemporary musical background, filled with different genres – and ends up with funky, disco, electro, breaks, techno & house music grooves. This musical background is supported by guitar, piano and vocal studies taken throughout his childhood, as well as completing three years of jazz and contemporary music research.

Right after his 21st birthday, Ricky moved to Los Angeles (USA) searching for absolute independence. He purchased his first turntables and mixer with the money earned working 8 days a week at bars and catering events. Later on, he ended up sharing decks at the legendary ‘Sketchpad’ after-hours with DJ Taylor, known as the American response to Sasha. Ricky decided to go back to Buenos Aires (Argentina) and looked forward to growing into the local scene.

I had a ton of fun putting this mix together for Vital Radio about two weeks ago.

I’ve been on a big time house binge lately and gearing up for my Speedboats and Big Explosions project with DJ Endgame. The two of us played our first official gig as a duo at the People Downtown Halloween jam here in Toronto a couple of weeks ago and the place was electric. In terms of bringing our two styles together in to one neat little package, we’re pretty much already there.

This mix is a pretty good representation of, at least a portion, of the Speedboats style. Often techy, and even more frequently kitschy and disco-influenced. From there to progressive and pop and back again.

10. Benny Royal – Let’s Keep it Coming (Original Mix)
11. Fatoby Slim – Star 69 (Thomas Gold What The F**k Mix)
